The caves were formed millions of years ago by underground rivers cutting through limestone rock formations and forming unique underground pools and sparkly limestone stalactites and stalagmites.

Geologist Albert Ernest Kitson reserved the Buchan Caves area to protect the caves in 1887 before both main caves became open to the public in 1913 until now.

Today, the caves and its preserved and spectacular honeycomb limestone formations are protected and well maintained.

Professionally guided tours of the Royal and Fairy Caves now operate daily, excluding Christmas Day. It’s an educational and historical tour with a unique opportunity to see and experience the wonders of nature.

Tickets to tour the Buchan caves can be pre-purchased online or they can easily be purchased the same day of your visit located in the Buchan Caves Reserve Visitor Centre.

Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by guardian and all visitors are recommended to wear sturdy footwear for a safer experience during the exploration.

The Buchan Caves are situated within the Buchan Caves Reserve. The area is surrounded by trees and wildlife where you can see some lyrebirds and bellbirds. Its a great family tour to experience all together.
